The Internet is not the work of one person. Many engineers contributed, but two names stand out: Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn. They are widely known as the fathers of the Internet.
The Beginning - ARPANET
In 1969, a network called ARPANET connected a few computers in the United States. It was the early ancestor of today's Internet.
TCP/IP - The Key Invention
In the 1970s, Cerf and Kahn designed TCP/IP. This set of rules allows different networks to talk to each other. On 1 January 1983, ARPANET switched to TCP/IP, and the modern Internet was born.
The World Wide Web
In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, which made the Internet easy to browse. The web and the Internet are often confused, but they are not the same thing.
Why It Matters
The Internet changed how the world learns, works and communicates. Knowing its history helps students understand the technology they use every day.
